Collectibles are usually items designed purposely to be collected. Collectibles are distinguished from other things collected such as natural items, like rocks. Then, too, many things are collected which were originally designed for other purposes. Sometimes, the type of item becomes so popular among collectors that companies then start marketing them specifically to those buyers.
Sometimes, events occur that result in an item becoming exceptionally valuable. These collectibles are sold for substantial amounts of money. Some companies contribute to rarity by limiting the number of items manufactured and/or numbering each individual item.
